Tie – Dye Clothes

The name tie-dye is derived from the technique or the process of designing the garment. The clothes are tied and dyed to form various designs or patterns. This is quite famous and best known for summer styles. The bright colors and flamboyant patterns are the unique edge this garment holds over other garment.

How is it made?

Tying

The process to achieve the infamous tied designs includes folding and typing the garment in certain patterns and then using two or more color dyed for dyeing. The technique involves twisting, folding, crumpling, crushing or pleating and tucking. The folded parts of the are secured or tied using strings or rubber strips or bands. The influence with the fabric before applying the dye is known as resists. Resists are used because they help in partial or incomplete application of the dye on the whole garment. Now a days, advanced tied dyed include an extra step that includes an initial application of the dye before applying the resist, several dyes in sequence and different resist and in the end using stencils and stitching and then discharging.

Dying

After the process of tying the next steps involves dying the parts. Now, one can use multiple colors for every parts of tied part of the garment or one can also use one or two or more than two colors enhancing the combination of the colors. So, the color combination is what matters, as the end result depends on the combination. Contrasting the usual resist dying processes, tied dying is branded by the saturated, bright, vivid bold and clear patterns and primary colors. Most liked patterns are concentric spirals, peace sign, mandala, spirals, sun rays and peace signs. 

About Dyes

A range of dyes are considered for using in the process. They may include household, acid, fiber active and bin dyes. Earlier tied dyes were produced with the retail domestic dyes. But now a days in order to achieve a dye that will be affective on various fabrics or fibers, dyes are combined of several kinds of dyes. The need for a strong dye is avoid fading of the color and more importantly mixing of multiple dyes of the cloth. The main fibers and fabrics that are protein based can be dyed are wool, silk and even feathers. One can use acid dyes to dye artificial polyamide fiber, like nylon. Acid dyes are equally safe as natural dyes. While tank dyes like indigo are the low-quality dyes that are used only on cellulosic fibers and silk.
